Does Medicare Part D Require Certain Pharmacies?

Do I have to use a certain pharmacy to use the benefits in my Part D Prescription Drug Plan?

In short, you may go to your pharmacy of choice, however it’s important to note that insurance companies have contracts with different pharmacies.

The best rates for Part D Prescription Drug plan holders are going to be with pharmacies that are considered preferred, or in-network to your plan and insurance company. The next best rates will come from pharmacies that are standard retailers to a specific plan or company.

Some pharmacies may not have agreements with your insurance company or are considered out-of-network.  Getting medications from these pharmacies may come at the highest cost.

When you are ready to enroll in a Prescription Drug Plan or do the recommended annual review of your existing plan, we will ask that you to provide a list of your current medications.  This includes the quantity and dosage for each.

We will also ask which pharmacy you prefer to use.

During your appointment, we will review what medications you are currently prescribed and find the plan that fits you the best.  Even though we ask which pharmacy you prefer to use, it DOES NOT lock you into that pharmacy.

If you are traveling and must fill a prescription, you can go to another pharmacy.  However, asking ahead of time helps us put you into the best-case scenario for you to obtain your prescriptions.
