Will I automatically be enrolled in Medicare when I turn 65?
If you are receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement or disability benefits, you will be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. 3 months prior to your 65th birthday or 24th month of disability, you will be sent an Initial Enrollment Package. This will contain information about Medicare, a questionnaire, and your red, white, and blue Medicare card.
If you want both Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance), you should sign and keep your Medicare card.
If you don’t want Part B coverage, put an X in the refusal box on the back of the Medicare card form. Sign the form and return it with the card to Social Security at the address shown.
You will be sent a new Medicare card showing that you only have Part A. Before turning 65, it’s a great idea to meet with a licensed insurance agent to discuss your options and the enrollment process.
How does Medicare automatic renewal work?
Medicare coverage remains unchanged annually unless modified by you. While plans may renew, benefits and costs can vary each year. It’s advisable to review Medicare options yearly during the October 15 to December 7 Annual Enrollment Period. For the upcoming plan year 2025, recent changes to Part D Prescription Drug plans, implemented by the Inflation Reduction Act, may impact coverage.
Review the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) letter from your plan. This arrives in September to note any changes. Be proactive in scheduling time to meet with a licensed agent to review your options.
