Firework Safety Tips for this Fourth of July
Independence Day has arrived and for many people, that means it is time to celebrate!
In just a few hours the family will all be back together, barbecue will be on the grill, and a firework show once the sun sets. Kids will be watching in amazement and parents will be full of joy that they can share this tradition with their families.
While wrapped up in this joy and excitement, it’s easy to forget the most important part is safety.
When it comes to fireworks, it’s important to have fun, but also be as safe as possible. Many people often forget just how dangerous fireworks can be. Before you light up your fireworks this Fourth of July, check out this quick list of tips that can keep your loved ones safe and the memories full of joy!
- Leave it to the pros! While fireworks are legal in many states, they aren’t always safe. The National Safety Council recommends enjoying fireworks at public displays conducted by professionals instead of at home. - Never allow children to handle fireworks! Young children should be kept at a safe distance and their activity should be monitored closely. Allow them to watch the show from afar. You get a better view when you stand back anyway!
- Never use fireworks while under the influence of alcohol! If there is going to be alcohol around when using fireworks, make sure you have a “Designated Firework Friend.” It’s just like a “Designated Driver,” but for fireworks.
- Stay a safe distance from other people, homes, or flammable items! The last thing you want during a celebration is to harm those around you by being reckless. Ensuring that you’re a safe distance from people, homes, and flammable items can help to minimize that risk.
- Soak used fireworks in water before discarding! Fireworks can still be hot or malfunction after use, which can present a dangerous situation. By soaking your fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding, you can avoid potential safety hazards after the firework show!
